MATHEMATICAL LOGIC
Yale GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES & YALE College ★ PHIL 567 & 267 ★ SPRING 2017
Teaching Fellow ★ Professor SUN-JOO SHIN
Taught 20 Yale Philosophy Ph.D. and Yale College students advanced formal logic metatheory, up to model theory’s core theorems: Gödel’s completeness, compactness, and Löwenheim-Skolem-Tarski. Skills included utter clarity of thought and devotion to detail through rigorous proof-based analysis in a highly abstract, complex area of mathematics designed to probe the intricacies of logical systems.

Akhil is the best TF I ever had. He went above and beyond and made extensive handouts for each section. We didn't get to have a section covering the material for a p-set due right after Spring Break so he sent us an eleven page document on satisfaction clauses. He is a great teacher. He makes math logic accessible for people who have not taken any math classes since they got to college, like me. He is great at tailoring his explanation to the individual learning style of each student. During section he would cold-call us on questions but in a way that pushed us to understand the material and helping us work out problems when we didn't know how to solve them. I usually hate cold-calling but it worked well with Akhil.
Akhil's commitment to excellent teaching became clear from the very beginning of the term, and was confirmed time and again by his clear explanations, his incredibly helpful and detailed handouts, and his willingness to answer questions pertinent to the class even by e-mail, outside of section. His kindness, straightforwardness, and complete lack of condescension made it easy to seek help even for students (like myself) with little or no background in logic and mathematical logic. His teaching certainly made the class *far* more manageable for me than it would have otherwise been.
Akhil sent out example solutions, which was very helpful in knowing what level of proof detail was required
Very Good. He is the reason I got anything out of the class. Very clear and understands the material.
Akhil was the best TA I have ever had. He elevated my level of engagement with the material three-fold, and was the efficient cause of my success in the course. His effort went above and beyond what I would ever expect, and his creativity in preparing for section was truly extraordinary.
I LOVE AKHIL. He always made handouts and explained everything so we could understand and really helped all of us pass this class. He was such a blessing, and I have never had a TF be as caring and active in a class as Akhil was.
Really devoted and committed to improvement among the students. Great teacher.
AKHIL WAS AMAZING! He pushed students to do their best while also making sure that they were able to succeed. His sections really clarified concepts that I often didn't fully get in lecture, and his office hours were also so useful in helping me complete the psets. Honestly the best TA I've had at Yale.
Akhil is the greatest TA I have ever had. He is helpful, kind, and understanding. He is able to teach the course in an extremely understandable way, taking really hard problems and making them easy to understand. He is so comprehensive with his grading and teaching, and he always writes handouts for every problem set and every section. He is also willing to call you out if you look confused so he can better explain the material, and he puts so much work into teaching his students.
Akhil had a terrific grasp of the course material and a teaching style that was appropriately different from Professor Shin's. Akhil's section always felt in dialogue with lecture and ensured that I was learning the material "from all angles," so to speak. Akhil was particularly good at teaching the practical dimensions of the class, which Professor Shin often glossed over to make room for theory.
One of the best TAs I have had at Yale. Very effective teacher and also committed to learning.
Akhil is a fantastic, lucid teacher. His handouts are really helpful and his lessons are well thought out. My grades in and enjoyment of the class both increased dramatically after I started attending section with him.
Akhil is absolutely phenomenal. He took the time to create several handouts per week that approach the material from a different angle, was always available for meetings, and gave thorough feedback on grading.
Akhil is the best TA I have ever had at Yale. He puts in so much time and effort to make the students learn the most out of this class. It is evident that he truly cares for the students as well and that he understands (as a former Yalie) our struggles. He is truly a wonderful person.
Phenomenal teacher and really cares about student learning.
Akhil is probably one of the best TFs I've ever had. His dedication to making sure that everyone understood the material and could succeed in the class is commendable, considering the other obligations he likely has.
AKHIL IS THE BEST TF I HAVE EVER HAD. EVER. He was so committed to his job, and was ready to bend over backwards to help his students. His sections and office hours were impeccably run, and honestly, they are what got me through this class.
Akhil is really something special. This was the first class he ever TA'd, and he did an incredible job. His explanations are exceptionally clear, yet his efficiency in section is amazing. I left section feeling so much more confident about the material every single week. He's a tough grader (definitely tougher than Paul), but he'll do everything he can to help you meet his expectations. On top of all this, he's just a really good guy. He's going to go very far in life after he graduates from YLS. I'm glad I got to be his student while he's still here!
